Dr Ellen Downes

Ellen was named a 2019 NSW/ACT Rural Women’s Award Finalist highlighting Ag EDGE, a unique farmer led platform that helps farming families to successfully navigate the highs and lows of agriculture.

Ellen is the daughter of a dairy farming family who now runs a mixed farming enterprise at Canowindra in the Central West of NSW with her husband Stuart. As a wife and mother to three young children, Ellen successfully juggles the farm and home life, being a show enthusiast, stud dairy cattle breeder and her career as a regional doctor specialising in Rehabilitation Medicine.

Ellen has an extensive background with the Agricultural Show Movement, particularly in NSW including as an exhibitor, official, announcer, early instigator of the Show Next Generation movement and her current role as a Councillor on the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW. Ellen is also an advocate for rural health previously running a national undergraduate group for rural health students and as a Council Board member of the National Rural Health Alliance (NRHA).

For the past 13 years she has been actively involved in Ag EDGE, an independent and not for profit farm business management group. A strength of AgEDGE is how it acknowledges the importance of women within farming by offering them a seat at the farm business table.

Ellen’s vision is to empower women to become more actively involved in farm businesses to help them successfully navigate the agricultural landscape through involvement in Ag EDGE.
